Hot Air Balloon

Most of the time, hot-air balloons are used for fun. Many balloonists like to compete in sports and set new records, but they also like to take morning or afternoon rides to rest and take in the scenery. A balloon trip can be done by just the balloonist or by a group. When a lot of balloons get together for a launch, there is usually not much of a sense of competition. Normal flights last between one and three hours, cover several kilometers, and often land back where they took off.

The number of balloons at a rally can range from a few for a day trip to hundreds for a week-long party. Races over long distances, “hare and hound” games, and spot landings are all competitive events. Hare and dog races are easy to set up and judge because only one balloon (the hare’s) needs to be let go first and go a good distance. Participants try to land as close as they can to the hare. Markers are often dropped to make it look like the balloons have landed in busy areas. After that, the balloons move to less crowded areas.
